Peppermint oil is extracted from the peppermint plant which is a cross between water mint and spearmint. The peppermint plant is also known as Mentha piperita and it belongs to the Labiatae family. It actually grows in North America and Europe. Peppermint is an herbaceous perennial plant and grows up to 30 to 90 cm tall. The flowers of this plant are purple in color. The stems and leaves are a little hairy. 

 

Peppermint oil is primarily refreshing and rejuvenation oil that is used to stimulate the mind in aromatherapy. It increases your power of concentration, increases your mental alertness while calming and cooling down your skin.

Properties

Peppermint oil is pale yellow in color and its viscosity is watery.

It has a sharp, fresh and the smell of menthol. 

 

Integrants The chemical composition of this oil comprises germacrene-d, menthol, menthone, isomenthone, methofuran, methyl acetate, limonene, b-pinene, a-pinene, 1, 8-cineole, trans-sabinene hydrate and pulegone.
Therapeutic Properties The therapeutic properties of peppermint oil are nervine, antiphlogistic,analgesic, antiseptic, carminative, anesthetic, vasoconstrictor, antigalactagogue, astringent, stimulant, cephalic, cholagogue, hepatic, cordial, febrifuge,decongestant, emmenagogue, antispasmodic,expectorant, sudorific, stomachic, and vermifuge.
Blends Well With

Peppermint oil blends well with lavender, lemon, rosemary, eucalyptus, marjoram and eucalyptusbenzoin.

 

Precautions

Peppermint oil is non-irritant and non toxic but it may cause sensitization which is due to its menthol content. Also, it can cause irritation to mucus membranes as well as skin. Also, keep it away from the eyes and reach of children. Do not use in pregnancy. 

 

Indigestion: The usage of Peppermint oil aids in the process of digestion. For this problem of indigestion, people drink a glass of water with two or three drops of this oil in it.
