Croton oil is extracted from the Croton tiglium Linn. Croton tiglium is a small tree that is native to the Malay Archipelago and India. This oil acts as a strong purgative and so, causes irritation that is capable of causing skin lesions and severe diarrhea. Croton oil is poisonous in nature and so, its usage is not that extensive today. Its basic usage is found as a component in many facial peels.
The use of croton oil in the form of drug was discovered in China. But, for the duration of the 16th century, it was introduced to the Dutch by the western parts of the world. Even at that time, it was also used as a purgative and a counter irritant. Because of its strong toxic effects, this oil eventually fell out of favor for usage. This oil has been found in India. It has been used to treat constipation in the conventional Chinese medicine. It is extracted from the seeds by the process of cold pressing.
