Elemi oil is derived from the resin of Canarium luzonicum using the process of steam distillation. Canarium luzonicum belongs to the family of Burseraceae is also known as C. commune or Manila Elemi. This tree is a tropical tree which is basically found in the Philippines. It can grow as long as 98 feet (30 meters). When the leaves in this tree are sprouted it secretes a pale yellow resin, this resin is the one from which the oil is extracted. When this resin comes into contact with air it solidifies and it further prevents the secretion of more resin from the tree. Basically two qualities of This oil are exported from Manila which is the Primera and the Secunda. The Secunda is the unclean gum which is crude in nature, while the Primera is the cleansed gum. Ancient Egyptian civilizations used this oil for embalming today, the modern civilization use it in different incense, soaps, varnish and various other products.
